Teacher FAQ

“I’m interested in buying a house with YRNO, what should I do?”

Great! We have an application that is available on our website that we recommend you complete. If you have any questions about the program feel free to contact one of our staff members. Click here for the application.

Am I eligible?

Are you a full-time school teacher in the Greater New Orleans Area? If you are, you are eligible.

Why is this program only open to teachers?

While we believe that many individuals are very deserving of our program we have limited the program to those that best fit our organizations mission. Because YRNO’s primary mission is to educate and empower the youth of New Orleans we believe that helping teachers can only further benefit our primary stakeholders.

What are the requirements?

All teachers that go through our program must continue to teach for three additional years. During which time they are also required to reside in the home and maintain flood and homeowners insurance. Additionally we ask teachers to provide free tutoring services to students from our program if the need arises (and if scheduling permits).

I filled out an application, what’s next?

We will be in contact with you within two weeks of when you submit the application. In the meantime, work on getting a pre-qualification letter from a lender. E-mail us if you’d like some help figuring out how to do this. Once you have a pre-qualification letter, let us know how much you’ve qualified for and we can determine which of our available houses meet your budget.

Do I need a real estate agent?

How do I get the financing I need to buy a home?

Before banks write a mortgage they first pre-qualify an applicant to determine the amount of money the applicant can afford. The amount and rate is determined by an individuals income and credit score. Almost all banks provide this service for free or for a small fee. If you need help finding financing or need more information E-mail us.

Do I need to be a first time home buyer?

No. Owning a in the past does not disqualify you from the program; however, preference will be given to those who haven’t owned in the last three years. First time home buyers can also qualify for additional subsidies from the City of New Orleans’ first time home buyer program .
