Partnering with NENA

NENA, or the Neighborhood Empowerment Network Association, is a nonprofit organization that operates in the Lower Ninth Ward that offers assistance to displaced residents. Last week, YRNO staff and volunteers helped gut out a home that hadn’t been touched since Hurricane Katrina 11 years ago. YRNO staff also helped with landscaping at another NENA property. Everyone found the experience very inspirational and touching, and it demonstrates that there’s still work to be done. Special thanks to John Paul the Great Academy and the Dunlap Family for their enthusiastic service! Additional thanks to Dave at Capstone New Orleans for his bee hive […]

Transitions

Last week, YRNO announced the departure of our Executive Director, William Stoudt. William served the community and YRNO for over 10 years, and he will be sincerely missed. William leaves behind a strong team that will continue to make Youth Rebuilding New Orleans an agent of change. We are sad to see him go but please join us in wishing him the best of luck in his future endeavors! We would also like to announce current staff John Coyle, Dwayne (Prince) Holmes Jr., and Maggie Daly, pictured below, as YRNO’s transitional Leadership Team. Families Serve: Volunteering with YRNO as a Family

Over the years, YRNO has had a multitude of volunteers from across the country come to serve with the organization to help rebuild New Orleans. There are three main types of volunteers that serve with YRNO: schools, corporate groups and families. This year alone we have had around a dozen families come to volunteer with us ranging from a day to a full work week of service. Families remain strong partners of our volunteer base in fulfilling our mission to engage youth in the betterment of the New Orleans community. We spoke with members of the Resch family who volunteered […]

March Madness: Spring Break with YRNO

This March, YRNO has had an abundance of volunteer groups come visit to help in our rebuilding efforts on St. Ann. The month started off with a group of students from NOVA Southeastern University. The team of students helped YRNO repaint the front and inside of our neighbor’s house that was damaged by a fire. The second week of March, three groups of students stayed at the bunkhouse with us: University of South Carolina Upstate, Agnes Scott College (Decatur, GA) and University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA). USC Upstate and UVA students helped us in the demolition of the inside of […]

Sci Academy Spring 2016 Interns

This spring YRNO has the pleasure of welcoming four student interns from one of our partner schools, Sci Academy. Antonio, D’Juan, Charles and Thomas work for YRNO twice a week for training in construction in an effort to prepare to enter the workforce. They work either in small groups or one-on-one with our full time construction staff on site to learn construction skills necessary to supplement the work of the volunteers and full time staff. Since their arrival in February the young men have learned a number of construction techniques including how and when to use different saws, framing and […]

YRNO Wins $37,000 in the Super Service Challenge

Recently, YRNO won $37,000 in the 2015 Super Service Challenge. Founded in 2011 in Indianapolis, The Super Service Challenge’s mission is to promote philanthropic giving and corporate service. Drew Brees and the Brees Dream Foundation brought the Challenge to New Orleans in 2012, and that first year nonprofits around New Orleans received over 1 million dollars from surrounding businesses and corporations, including YRNO. Each year since 2012, YRNO has participated in the Super Service Challenge and benefitted from the Challenge donations. To enter the Challenge lottery, volunteers can submit videos reflecting on their time serving with YRNO. At the end […]

Busy Week at YRNO

November has already become a busy month for the YRNO team!  To kick things off, the staff has been making room for several large donations from the Wooster Paint Company and a private donation of training supplies from one of our friends at the Habitat for Humanity Restore.  Check out the Fresh Prince posing with one of the donations below: The YRNO team is full of Tulane alum, so we were very happy to kick off Tulane’s Homecoming weekend with a diverse group of Tulane staff, alumni, and prospective students on Thursday, November 5th.  This group worked hard installing siding […]

On the move!

The last two days we’ve been moving a donated house from General Pershing Street to our (formerly) vacant lot on St. Ann, simultaneous to having a family from New York volunteer with us. Check out all the action below! Rolling out the orange carpet?   Don’t get tangled!   Taking a heat break?   Whee!       Here comes the first half!   Negotiating the corner.   William provides the oversight.   Part two, comin’ through.   Back it in.   William and Jack, on site together for the last time.   Both parts, safely home.

LSU Health New Orleans

Today we had another quintet helping us clear debris from a house we’re moving to the vacant lot at our St. Ann Street properties, but this time the volunteers were students from LSU Health New Orleans and the site was General Pershing Street. Peep the action below! Prince charming.   Empty ‘barrows.   One chunk at a time.   Brick city.   Fill ‘er up!
