Youth Rebuilding New Orleans is excited to announce our participation in the Healthy Block Initiative taking place on the St. Ann Street and North White Street block in the Bayou St. John neighborhood. In partnership with other local organizations (Urban Conservancy, SOUL NOLA, and Green Light New Orleans), the Healthy Block Initiative offers neighbors in the homes surrounding YRNO’s worksite: Trees, Pavement Removal, and Rain barrels to help manage stormwater in the neighborhood. YRNO’s “Yellow House” on the corner is serving as a demonstration site for each of these strategies of  stormwater management, and YRNO trainees are participating in training […]

Winternship and Community Projects Kick Off 2018

This year, while many students were relaxing over winter break, YRNO’s 6 Winter Interns (Winterns!) and Site Supervisors completed 2 high impact community projects: rebuilding a shed and planter boxes in Ms. Gloria’s community garden on Claiborne, and painting the interior space of Burnell’s upcoming internet cafe in the Lower 9th Ward.   As a pilot program, YRNO is proud of the leadership of our Site Supervisors in planning, supervising, and helping keep track of the budget for the Winternship Program. Also this month, YRNO was lucky to have a number of families travel in from out of town to serve […]

Kicking Off Saturday Service Days

This past Saturday, YRNO hosted Jesuit High School, Ben Franklin High School’s YRNO Club, and Boys Hope Girls Hope on site for a HUGE local volunteer effort! We were reminded of YRNO’s roots as teenagers from around the city came together to beautify the neighborhood, learn essential carpentry skills, and follow the lead of 3 talented young leaders: YRNO Site Supervisors Isaiah, Channin, and Jevone. The first task was to cut and dispose of scrap lumber, and Jevone led a group of volunteers in learning how to do so safely. He and Construction Manager John also taught a group from […]
