YRNO’s  Summer Program provides local youth the opportunity to gain hands-on construction skills while participating in professional development and life skills workshops. YRNO goes to the Lower Ninth Ward

  By: Maliek Breland The end is near for YRNO’s tenure in the Bayou Saint John neighborhood. These past 4 years we have renovated a total of 4 houses, did a number of home owner projects, neighborhood sweeps, and storm water management projects. Now we will be moving to the well-known Lower Ninth Ward, which is located towards the mouth of the Mississippi river. In 2005, the ninth ward was heavily damaged by hurricane Katrina and Rita. Before the storms hit there were 14,008 people residing in the neighborhood. Now there are roughly 5,000  people residing in the neighborhood.       […]

Summer Program Application Available for 2019

Youth Rebuilding New Orleans REbuild Program provides summer internships for youth aged 16-21 interested in a career in the construction industry. Participants learn construction, job-readiness and financial literacy skills during a part-time, paid internship. Program Dates: June 25-July 25. Program Schedule: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, 8 am-2:30 pm Program Application: Completed applications (2 pages) should be emailed to maggie@yrno.com or mailed to Youth Rebuilding New Orleans at 1933 Hope Street, New Orleans 70119. As always, Youth Rebuilding New Orleans has been hosting hundreds of students from around the country who dedicated time, money and effort toward our mission. To all those young people traveling to work with us, THANK YOU! Your volunteer efforts allow YRNO to sell our homes for below the market value, helping teachers and public servants access homeownership. University of Virginia and University of South Florida St. Petersburg have both been traveling to New Orleans to stay in our bunkhouse and volunteer for the last few years. 10 Steps to Rebuilding a Blighted House

1. Recruit a team of local youth leaders interested in learning more about construction. Gut the house and install plywood sheathing. Be sure to get a brand new foundation and roof done by licensed subcontractors! 2.  Site Supervisors should teach and lead youth volunteers from around the country to re-frame the shotgun double into a spacious L-shape double. 3. Applications open for Winternship 2018

YRNO is pleased to announce our second annual REbuild Winternship Program! During the 2-week internship during schools’ winter breaks, local youth team up to complete home repair and lanscaping projects for homeowners in need while gaining impactful, paid work experience. Consider it YRNO’s gift to the community. YRNO is accepting applications from youth aged 16-21 with either some experience in carpentry or construction or who are currently enrolled in a carpentry training class. Summer Volunteer RECAP!

Summer is also a busy time for youth around the country to get out and volunteer, and YRNO is lucky enough to have about 200 volunteers helping out on our jobsites this summer. Kicking off summer around Memorial Day, the girls from the Laurel School volunteered during their full-service trip with YRNO, which included a swamp tour, bowling at Rock-N-Bowl, museums, meals, snoballs, and more.
