William Stoudt: The “mayor” of (Youth Rebuilding) New Orleans

It has been a very good year at Youth Rebuilding New Orleans. For that, you need look no further than the Executive Director, William Stoudt. Since last December, YRNO has been honored by the NOCDC as an Outstanding Citizen Diplomat and by USA Today as one of the 10 best family volunteer vacations.  The organization has won grants from BCM, the Starbucks Foundation, the Greater New Orleans Foundation, the Brown Foundation and the Edward Wisner Donation.  Most importantly, two completely renovated homes have been sold, with two more soon to follow. NOCDC

This morning we hosted a spirited group of volunteers from faraway lands brought to us by the New Orleans Citizen Diplomacy Council. They did gutting work at our side project on South Scott Street. Thanks to all!     Taking a whack.     Da whole NOCDC crew.

Tulane Hillel

On Saturday a group from Tulane Hillel volunteered with us, helping to build a community garden at Carver Collegiate Academy in New Orleans East, sponsored by Volunteer Louisiana. Peep the photos of Prince and Chris with the crew below!     Lookin’ good.   Prepping the box.   Shake that rake!   Let’s take a break.   Transporting soil.   Dump it!   Getting dirt in the planter box.   Stay alert, Chris!   Chris provides assistance.   Too much fun!

AmeriCorps 20th Anniversary

On Friday, Jack and his fellow Tulane VISTA members volunteered at YRNO as part of their AmeriCorps 20th anniversary service day. The group got wet with both sweat and rain at our latest side project on South Scott Street. Let’s hear it for VISTA power! #AmeriCorps20 Shawn and Griff remove old siding.     Jack has no fear of heights.     Joe gets a laugh from Brianna.     Dvhante keeps an eye on the ladder crew.     Are Prince and Joe watching Alle do all the work?   Who’s hiding behind the mask with Helen and Mary? Archbishop Shaw

Yesterday we had a group of freshmen from Archbishop Shaw High School in Marrero volunteering at our South Salcedo work site, which is almost finished. Led by Brother Adam Dupre and basketball coach John Quilter, the guys leveled the yard and put down sod with military-like precision. Check out the video and pictures below!   Jack and Ryan greet the group.   “Stay calm. Nobody panic.”   Prince spells out the work to be done.   Complete those waivers!   Doing their level best.   It’s good to be king.     Stuck in the rake.   Sod prep continues. [...]

Brown Foundation Service Fair

Yesterday, Eliza, Sandy, Sam and William represented YRNO at the Brown Foundation’s Service Learning Event/Fair at the Pontchartrain Center. Over 900 local students and teachers were in attendance. The Brown Foundation has renewed our grant this year, so we can continue funding our service learning initiative with partner high schools, including Jesuit High School and Sci Academy. Thanks so much! Will and Sandy speak with our neighbor Joe from UNITY of Greater New Orleans.   Eliza and Joe talk about the day’s activities.   On your marks…get set…   GO!!   The YRNO crew talks to a student leader.   [...]
