Super Service Challenge winners!

Recently, Youth Rebuilding New Orleans learned that we were winners in the Super Service Challenge video contest, and today, we found out that we will receive more than $44,000 in total!!!! We are so thankful to all the volunteers whose videos were submitted, especially those from Dillard University, bringing in about two-thirds of that! Prince, Jack, Will and Abby celebrate the good news below!

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

YRNO had a true “dream team” of young volunteers in Mid-City today to serve in honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with college students from Tulane, Loyola, Xavier and Dillard–as well as high school students from St. Augustine–all working in the neighborhood of our South Salcedo rebuild site. Most took part in a “community sweep,” picking up trash and the like, while a smaller group took yet another whack at removing our gigantic tree stump out back. Thanks to all who came out to humbly serve in a way that would have made Dr. King proud. Pickup patrol.   Ha […]

Welcome our new interns!

YRNO has two interns for the spring semester who will be working on a historical web site project and other fun stuff. If you see them around, be sure to say hello to Brandon Golant and Katie Morgan, and stayed tuned here to see the fruits of their labor! Brandon is from Highland Park, IL. He’s 18 years old and a freshman at Tulane University. He’s currently on the pre-med track and enjoys studying the sciences. In his free time, he likes to run, swim and play tennis. He’s very excited to join Youth Rebuilding New Orleans and looks forward […]

Happy birthday, Nadia!

On Saturday, AmeriCorps alum Nadia Payne brought friends and family from all over to volunteer with YRNO for her birthday, closing out our Cowen Service Challenge week. Nadia’s from Atlanta and she asked her crew to donate their time and money to us as her gift, showing selflessness and a tremendously big heart! The group worked at our 10th Street rebuild site in Lakeview, and on Sunday donated tools after hearing of our recent burglary. We express our most sincere gratitude to all!   Too much fun.     Break time!       The crew hams it up for […]

Indiana University

Our third group in town for Cowen Service Challenge week was from Indiana University. They requested a split, so we put some of them at Alvar Street in the 9th Ward and the rest at South Salcedo in Mid-City. The visual evidence is below. Measuring out sheetrock at Miss Anne’s house.   Nailing it up.     A well-oiled machine.     Teamwork out back.

Wheeling Jesuit University

Another group we’ve had in town for Cowen Service Challenge week is from Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia, back for a third time. Beating the cold, Tom Weinandy’s crew of 16 volunteers has been inside sheetrocking up a storm at our new 10th Street rebuild site in Lakeview. Murph gets the team started.   Measuring it out.   Getting out for a little sun.   Playing twister comes in handy!   Raise da roof!   More meticulous measuring.   Don’t stop til you get enough!   Sportin’ the colors.   It takes two.   Dvhante lookin’ like a proud […]

University of South Dakota

One of the groups we have in town for Cowen Service Challenge week is from the University of South Dakota. The 11 hale and hearty volunteers are staying in our bunkhouse and fought their way through a storm in Missouri to get here, delaying them by a day. As cold as it has been in New Orleans this week courtesy of the suddenly trending “polar vortex,” this group of Coyotes escaped far more frigid weather in their home state. We started them off working on stump removal at 318 South Salcedo, and they got right to it. Coyotes in the […]

Holiday helpers

As our Cowen Service Challenge week gets underway, we want to thank all those volunteers who spent time helping us during the holidays. Happy New Year to the folks below! Murph directs AmeriCorps alum Olivia Immitt and her friend Austin, both from Utah. Olivia next heads to South America!     Nick Brown helped us clean up and got some service hours before heading off to Boston College next fall.   The Selati family helped Anne Baker and Prince with some sheetrocking at Alvar.   Dion and Prince were joined at South Salcedo by Peter, Bernadette and Rebecca Tuteur, as […]

Cowen Service Challenge

Next week YRNO will host dozens of volunteers from around the country at various work sites. As part of our partnership with Tulane University, we will dedicate the entire week’s worth of volunteer hours to the Cowen Service Challenge. This challenge aims to encourage students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends of Tulane to celebrate President Scott Cowen’s legacy of supporting healthy and vibrant communities through direct community service. By May 2, 2014, 750,000 hours of service will be completed in New Orleans and around the world.
