Don’t forget #GivingTuesday!

So you’ve survived Black Friday and are anticipating Cyber Monday, but we hope you don’t forget Giving Tuesday on December 3rd! YRNO would love to have your support this holiday season, through December 31st. Make a donation for yourself, request loved ones donate in your name, or donate in the name of that person who already has everything. Use the PayPal button on our donate page or send a check payable to Youth Rebuilding New Orleans at 1933 Hope Street, New Orleans, LA 70119. Since we are a 501(c)3 organization, all donations are tax deductible!

Giving thanks: Angelle Caffery

During this week of giving thanks, we spotlight Angelle Caffery, the first person to benefit from YRNO’s Project HOMEwork initiative back in 2010. Three years later, the art teacher at St. Mary’s Dominican High School couldn’t be more grateful. We contacted her recently for an update on how she’s doing, and here’s what she wrote back… YRNO has made an incredible impact on my life. At the time I moved in I could not find housing that I could afford for myself and my daughter. It was through the generosity of Bob Whitman, Jean and Irvin Barousse, Mary Shoemaker, William […]

Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan

This week we have a fine group of volunteers from the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan (by way of St. Paul’s Homecoming Center) out at our South Salcedo rebuild site. There are Spartans and there are Wolverines, but when it comes to getting the job done, rivalries go by the wayside and it’s all one team! Murph readies the troops.   Who got hole duty?   Getting the nails out.   The power tool makes an appearance.   Taking out the trash.   Into the dumpster it goes.   Raking up the rest.   This wood’s still good!   Looks […]

New projects, cont.

This past weekend, we had another group of Tulane students head out to a project on Alvar Street in the 9th Ward, where YRNO has begun helping a homeowner trying to revive a property still unoccupied since Hurricane Katrina. The crew installed insulation, and you can see their progress below! A job well done.

Tulane Athletics, Hahnville edition

YRNO continued its expansion to new projects this weekend with our second group of awesome Tulane student-athlete volunteers, as they helped fix a dilapidated ceiling at a house in Hahnville. Once again, Tulane athletics administrators Sue Bower and Caroline Thornton brought the crew, and we even had a couple of repeat customers from a September trip to South Salcedo, plus a couple more who worked with fellow classmates at another project last week. The whole crew included golfers Madison Opfer, Emily Penttila, Belen Goicoechea and Olivia Winning, tennis players Ipek Birol and Takuma Ohashi, cross-country runners Jack White and Mark […]

New projects

In order to make the best use of our awesome and seemingly endless pool of volunteers, YRNO is beginning to add some side projects to the ongoing work at our South Salcedo rebuild site. Last Saturday, we sent a group of Tulane students to do some cleaning up at the House of Faith on Elysian Fields. With Prince providing the oversight, everything got done lickety split. The visual evidence follows. Stay tuned for more such projects in the near future! Welcome to the jungle.   “Dig in,” says Prince.   What rules are we breaking here?   Transporting the junk… […]
