No tricks, just a treat

Halloween is tomorrow and we were privileged to have three volunteers come to our South Salcedo rebuild site today. Luling native Deanna Faucheux is an AmeriCorps alum from the University of Louisiana Lafayette, so we knew she’d bring some enthusiasm! Meanwhile, Chicago buddies Manny Cabrera and Alexis Sosa are traveling the country and are in New Orleans for the Halloween festivities and some volunteer fun. Good choice, folks! Deanna displays her skill with the drill.   Manny pries wood from the floor at Salcedo West.   Alexis takes his turn.   Hey, wait, let’s work as a team!   Making […]

AmeriCorps VISTA roundtable

Today Youth Rebuilding New Orleans was honored to host a roundtable discussion featuring Corporation for National and Community Service CEO Wendy Spencer and several Tulane AmeriCorps VISTAs, including Jack Styczynski of YRNO. Our Executive Director Will Stoudt had the opportunity to show Ms. Spencer around our South Salcedo rebuild site and tell her about YRNO’s mission. We were so happy to represent the city of New Orleans, Tulane, the AmeriCorps VISTA program and YRNO for such an esteemed guest!!!! Jack preps for the big powwow.   Will tells Wendy Spencer about YRNO.   The roundtable in session.   Erin Ricketts […]

Open House

Thanks to the folks who came out to YRNO’s Open House today at 316 S. Salcedo St. in Mid-City. A local educator will soon become the owner of this beautifully restored, three bedroom, two bathroom house, so spread the word to your teacher friends! Will talks with visitors on the back deck.   Our penguin mascot oversees Will’s balloon management skills.

St. Scholastica

Today we had more than 30 volunteers from St. Scholastica Academy in Covington out at our South Salcedo rebuild site as we prepare for an Open House on Saturday. Thanks to all who made the trip and helped out, as well as the school for a generous donation to YRNO! John Harty was one of the chaperones for the students. He says he participates in rebuilding efforts a few times a year, and believes in making progress one house at a time. “It aids the city when people can move into houses like this and become a part of our […]

Tulane Chi Omega

Today we had two great volunteers from the Rho chapter of Chi Omega at Tulane out cleaning up at our South Salcedo rebuild site–Julia Gallagher and Chelsea Adams. Julia organized the outing and did the work of at least 10 people. 😉 This ladder needs to be outside!   Have you ever seen one of these things?   Yeah, wow, it sucks up dust!   I’ll try it the old-fashioned way.   Adding to the scrap pile.

Incredible individuals

Wednesday we had an eclectic group of five volunteers out at South Salcedo that came to us through Tulane and United Saints, respectively. Nancy Rebold was in town for her Tulane class reunion and she was hosted by Katie Acuff. Brent Page stopped off in the middle of a cross-country bike ride for a little volunteering and New Orleans hospitality. The 18-year-old (!!!!) New Jersey native is taking a year off between high school and college at Johns Hopkins, and has a trans-Atlantic sail planned after his current adventure concludes! Duley Lott came all the way from the U.K. to […]

Tuesday we had more than two dozen volunteers from Shell Oil Company sporting their recognizable colors and working with us on South Salcedo. Some helped prepare Salcedo East for our upcoming Open House, others cleared out the backyard of Salcedo West, while still others helped construct a new wheelchair ramp for a neighbor. Tina Singh, who coordinated the event for Shell, wants to return. “We really enjoyed this chance to work with y’all and we hope we can do it again,” she said. “I think you guys are a great benefit for the community and there’s a lot of houses […]
